John sharply rebuked the Pharisees who came to his baptism. (LUK 3:10,13) When people wondered if John was the Christ, John answered: "I indeed baptize you with water, but there cometh one who is stronger than I, whose shoe latchet I am not worthy to unloose, he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire, whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat in his barn, and will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
