Saul was still breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord and obtained letters from the high priest (Annas, (ACT 4:6) and the council of which he was then president) for the synagogues of Damascus. They stated that if he found any who were Christians, he was to bring them bound to Jerusalem so that they might be punished. As he came near Damascus at noon, a light from heaven brighter than the sun shone around him and those who were with him. When they had all fallen to the earth, he heard a voice speaking to him in the Hebrew language: "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks." (ACT 26:16)
