Paul also sent back the same Tychicus who was the companion in his travels from Asia, (ACT 20:4} to them in Asia that from him the brethren might know his affairs. He carried with him Paul's letter to the Ephesians. (EPH 6:21,22) Tertullian, {Tertullian, against Marcion., 1. 5. c. 11,17} and Epiphanius {Epiphanius, in Hares. 42.} confirmed what was said by Marcion the heretic that this letter went by the name of the epistle to the Laodiceans. Grotius thought this to be credible enough to be done by him from the credit of the church of Laodicea. He affirmed that there was no reason why he should tell a lie in this matter and gathered from this that the letter to the Ephesians and also to the Laodiceans was written with the same words. It is to be noted in some old books (as it appears from Basil {Basil, against Eunomius, 1. 2.} and of Jerom's commentary on this place of the apostle) it was generally written (as it was the custom in the copies of letters that were to be sent to various places) "To the Saints which are at ********, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus." This was as if it had been sent first to Ephesus as the metropolis of Asia and from there to be sent to the rest of the churches of that province, (the name of each church would be inserted for the ********) Some of these churches had never seen Paul and his words especially bare this out: "After I heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and love to all the saints," (EPH 1:15)
